Corporate Social Responsibility & Sustainability
Keep up to date with what we're doing to support our Corporate Social Responsibility.
Solar Energy Update
October was our first full month of having all our solar panels up and running, and saw that they generated ~50% of our energy usage over this month. We are happy to see overall we have used less electricity from the grid in October. See our energy usage here.
Lab Innovations 2023
We are pleased to have attended Lab Innovations again this year, where there is always a great focus on sustainability. This was the second year in a row we have been included on their Innovation and Sustainability Trail! We love encouraging our customers to buy more sustainable, environmentally-conscious products and supporting the industry become more sustainable overall. See you there next year!
Shakespeare Infant School Learning Lab
Shakespeare Infant School in Eastleigh has just opened a fantastic new kitchen and preparation room. It is being used by all the children during the day and is open to parents in the evening, to improve their skills. This valuable facility was made possible through funding from Alpha Laboratories and supply and fitting by Howdens.
We hope the kitchen will be in use for years to come and enjoyed by many.
My Green Lab Ambassadors
We are proud to say that all our Key Account Managers have completed the My Green Lab Ambassador programme. This training programme focuses on 4 key areas of sustainability in laboratories. This brings new insights to how our sales team can focus conversations towards increasing sustainability with our customers.
Mental Health Awareness Day
On the 21st September, Alpha Laboratories held its second Mental Health Awareness Day at its HQ in Eastleigh. The day allowed staff to take part in yoga, enjoy a stress relieving massage and were treated to a tasty Thai food lunch from local company Mama's Kitchen. In addition to this, new starters were given a presentation by our 7 trained Mental Health First Aiders. The day was thoroughly enjoyed by all!
Alpha Laboratories completes NHS Evergreen Sustainable Supplier Assessment
We are pleased to have completed the NHS Evergreen Sustainable Supplier Assessment. The Assessment is a self-assessment and reporting tool and resulted in us receiving a Level 2: Comprehensive net zero targets and reporting for carbon emissions. The information reported through Evergreen is supporting us to understand our alignment with NHS sustainability priorities and identify those areas in which we need to accelerate progress.
Warsash Tree Update
We are happy to report the 75 oak trees planted by Alpha staff last December are growing strong at the Warsash site. The growth of these trees provides vital habitat for local species and will hopefully continue to grow for hundreds of years to come. See our drone footage of the trees thriving!
Solar Panels at HQ
In line with our plan and Net Zero goals, we have installed solar panels across the entire roof of our office, which will provide enough power in the summer time to satisfy 98% of our electricity needs. We have also installed batteries to assist night time fridge electric consumption and car charger capacity.
Shakespeare School Working Party
Alongside our donation to Shakespeare Infant School of £11,000 to refurbish their practical room and kitchen, 12 members of staff attended 2 working parties to help clean and set up the new space. This area will be used by both children and adults to learn new important skills in science.
Mental Health First Aiders
We are very pleased to announce that 7 members of Alpha staff have been trained as Mental Health First Aiders (MHFA) with St John's Ambulance. This means there is 1 MHFA to every 10 members of staff at Alpha. The role of a mental health first aider is to listen and offer a safe, confidential place to talk without judgement.
Electric Car Chargers Installed
As part of our environmental efforts, we have installed 10 electric car charging points outside our headquarters in Eastleigh. These will be used for our increasing fleet of electric and plug-in hybrid company cars, and also by Alpha staff for their personal cars.
Alpha Laboratories' Local Tree Planting Project
One of our contributing sustainability projects, in collaboration with the Hampshire Countryside Service and Hampshire County Council, is to help plant native oak trees in the local region. At the end of 2022, volunteers from the Alpha Laboratories team planted 75 oak trees at a local Site of Special Scientific Interest, as part of the Warsash Legacy Project. Find out more
Improving Wildlife Habitats at Alpha Laboratories HQ
Working with guidance from the RSPB we have undertaken extensive planting of rowan trees and thorn hedging to attract and protect birds and other wildlife in the Alpha garden. Our ‘bug hotel’ made from pallets and logs will attract and support a diversity of invertebrate species and a raised bed offers staff the opportunity for some lunch time gardening. Watch our 'Big Dig' video to see how it is taking shape.
