Achieving Net Zero & Our Carbon Footprint

Alpha Laboratories Ltd commits to reach net-zero by 2045.

Achieving Net Zero

As the climate crisis worsens, Alpha Laboratories understands it must make changes within its operations and business conduct.

We believe moving towards a more sustainable future for all is important to ensuring a strong and healthy planet. We have developed the following target to reflect the importance of change and remain accountable for our impact.

Alpha Laboratories Ltd commits to reduce scope 1 and scope 2 GHG emissions 60% by 2034 from a 2022 base year, and to measure and reduce its scope 3 emissions. Alpha Laboratories Ltd commits to reach net-zero by 2045. As part of this, it commits to reduce scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions 95% by 2045 from a 2022 base year.

We are proud to have our near-term and Net Zero targets approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Re-enforcing the company’s belief in our sustainability goals as we strive towards an achievable, better and more sustainable future for our industry.

Our 2034 goal relates to emissions sourced from:

  • Natural Gas

  • Electricity

  • Company vehicles

  • Refrigerant gases

Energy efficiency audits completed in the baseline year have identified the key opportunities to reduce the company’s impact and emissions. Since baseline year Scope 1 and 2 emissions Alpha have already reduced over 20% of its direct emissions in under 4 years.

All other emissions sources are measured with goals to reduce by 95% by 2045. This includes but is not limited to:

  • Business Travel

  • Waste

  • Procurement activities

  • Employee Commute and Homeworking

To meet our science-based net-zero targets we require collaboration and support from suppliers. Ensuring we remain accountable for our impact and report our emissions accurately, focusing on the most impactful areas of our carbon footprint. We encourage all stakeholders to align with climate science and commit to setting a science-based 1.5°C and net-zero target.

Our Carbon Footprint

Our latest Carbon Footprint covers 1st January – 31st December 2024. Alpha has seen an overall decrease of 37% of emissions since our baseline year. Alpha's Scope 1 and 2 emissions show a consistent reduction in emissions of 23% since our 2021/22 baseline – calculating between 10-12% each year. The only category to increase in this time is our electricity consumption, due to the electrification of heating systems, thus decreasing the natural gas use, and an increase in staff and resources at HQ since return to office post pandemic.

Scope 3 emissions make up for over 97% of the total carbon footprint. Over 78% of this is directly from our procurement of goods and services. This category has seen the biggest reduction overall since baseline, primarily sure to discontinuation of products from a high carbon producing supplier. We expect fluctuations in this category as Alpha look to collect product level carbon footprints. Within the past year we have seen an increase is our waste emissions, expectantly due to increased transparency and accuracy in reported information, however we expect these to decrease over the next several years as we are able to target high impact areas.

All Carbon Footprint data is collected in line with ISO 14064-1 and the Greenhouse Gas protocol. By aligning with these guidelines, we can record data in a robust system which is adaptable as we increase the accuracy of our collection methodology. This is supported by our third-party verification completed on our Carbon Footprint in line with ISO 14064-3.

Carbon Reduction Projects

  • LED Lighting
Following our energy efficiency audit several years ago Alpha has been slowly updating its lighting across the site. As of 2024 we have successfully switched all lighting to new LEDs.

  • Waste Disposal
To improve our data collection we invested with a new waste service provider, allowing a more detailed and accurate view of our largest waste streams. We still look to better account for some of the more niche waste opportunities.

  • Renewable Energy

Whilst we maintain a green electricity tariff on all purchased electricity. In 2023 Alpha invested in solar panels to help reduce our reliance on the national grid. Over the past year we have seen a difference in our electricity reliance and continue to monitor any further opportunities that can help boost this impact.

  • Internal Procurement
We aim to assess our internal supplies to ensure we are choosing more sustainable options across the business. We also look to reduce needless purchases for convenience and instil a stronger culture of accountability.
