Stevia rebaudiana (Stevia) is a plant native to South America show leaves contain sweet components called steviol and steviol glycosides. It was included as a food additive in the 8th edition of Japans Specifications and Standards for Food Additives and at the 69th JECFA (Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives) conference (held in June 2008, the ADI (Acceptable Daily Intake was established for steviol glycosides.
The nine major steviol glycosides as specified by JECFA are Stevioside, Rebaudioside A, Rebaudioside B, Rebaudioside C, Rebaudioside D, Rebaudioside F, Dulcoside A, Rubusoside, and Steviolbioside.
