Iron Liquid Colorimetric Assay Manufactured by Sentinel Diagnostics



Iron is an essential trace element and an important component of the oxygen carrying haemoglobin and myoglobin and also a component of some key enzymes. Increases in iron concentration can occur in haemochromatosis and liver damage and decreases in iron can be indicative of anaemia as a result of malabsorption due to gastrointestinal disease. Blood loss resulting from gastrointestinal lesions or heavy menstruation can also result in decrease iron levels. For estimation of iron status within the body this test is typically interpreted together with transferrin and ferritin.

Measurement of total iron binding capacity (TIBC) and unbound iron binding capacity (UIBC) may also be requested. Iron Liquid reagents use a direct colorimetric method for determination of iron in serum and plasma (heparin) without the need for a deproteinisation step. Iron is released from transferrin in the pH 4.8 buffer system and then quantitatively reduced to its ferrous state. The iron++ form a stable coloured complex with ferene S {3-(2-pyridil)-5,6-bis-{2-(5-furylsulfonic acid)]-1,2,4-triazine}. The colour intensity as determined by measuring absorbance at 593nm is directly proportional to the amount of iron in the sample.

Iron Liquid is a dual, ready-to-use liquid chemistry reagent system for measuring iron in serum or plasma (heparin or EDTA) with a measuring range of 5-1000 µg/dL. This Iron assay is suitable for manual methods of determination as detailed on the accompanying pack insert and can also be automated - a range of applications for clinical chemistry analysers are available (please enquire). Reagents are stored at 2-8C and have an on board stability of 30 days. The recommended calibrator for this assay is the Clinical Chemistry Calibrator (16550) and the calibration interval is 14 days. For QC purposes we recommend the Clinical Chemistry Controls (16150, 16250).
