The QuickGene series of instruments and kits provides a novel, innovative method for DNA and RNA extraction from a vast number of sample types, all without the need for strong centrifugation steps, or centrifugation at all.

QuickGene operates in a similar manner to traditional centrifugation methods, isolating DNA from samples by forcing said samples through a hydrophilic membrane. This hydrophilic surface retains hydrophilic molecules, such as DNA or RNA, depending on the target, but does not retain hydrophobic molecules, such as proteins. The result is that unwanted molecules are washed through the membrane, whereas DNA or RNA are retained in the membrane and eluted into collection tubes.

However, the major difference comes from the QuickGene porous membrane itself, which is 10 times thinner than conventional, usually glass fibre based, membranes. Traditional glass fibre membranes are approximately 1000µm in thickness and require large centrifugation forces to force samples through this thick membrane. QuickGene uses porous membranes only 100µm thick, requiring much weaker forces to move samples through the membrane, thus eliminating the need for centrifugation. This improves nucleic acid preservation, increasing chain length, while retaining high purity and yield. The forces required are instead generated by compressed air, supplied by the QuickGene instruments.

This kit is compatible for use with the QuickGene-Auto12S (631-46159) and -Auto24S (638-46169) DNA extraction instruments and allows for automated isolation of DNA from whole blood samples up to 200µL in volume. Unlike some other kits, which often contain phenol and chloroform, QuickGene kits use non-hazardous organic solvents to provide a safer work environment. Once processed, the isolated and purified DNA is suitable for use in many downstream analyses including, among others: sequencing, PCR, blotting, DNA micro arrays and digestion.

These kits improve on the QuickGene semi-automated kits and instruments by providing an all-in-one, fully automated DNA extraction solution. Simply load your blood sample into the kit and onto the instrument, select your program and the system takes care of the rest.

Each test is provided in its own self-contained strip containing everything required for the automated instrument to process your samples. Each pack contains enough strips to run 48 samples, equivalent to 4 full runs of the QuickGene-Auto12S and 2 full runs of the -Auto24S instruments.
