Thyroid hormone receptors (TR) are ligand-dependent transcription factors that mediate biological activities of thyroid hormones. Thyroid hormone receptor-β2 (TRβ2) is a high affinity receptor for triiodothyronine and belongs to the nuclear hormone receptor family and the NR1 subfamily.

TRβ2 is often used as a marker for cone cells. Retinal photoreceptors, composed of rods and cones in vertebrates, work as light detectors through phototransduction. Cone photoreceptor cells play an vital role in colour perception. There are three types of cones responding to long (L), medium (M) and short(S) wavelengths of light and these are sometimes referred to as red, green and blue cones respectively. TRβ2 is essential for the development of M or green cones in the embryonic retina. It has previously been reported that TRβ2-deficient mice exhibit a form of colour blindness with a selective loss of medium-long wave responses but retention of short wave responses.

This TRβ2 antibody is suitable for detection of mouse TRβ2 by Western Blotting and immunostaining. When used in immunostaining protocols the antibody will react strongly with developing cone precursors and weakly stain cone photoreceptors. To obtain a clear immunostaining signal antigen-retrieval by boiling is required.
