Product Information

Calprotectin is a heterodimeric calcium binding protein of the S100 family predominantly found in the cytosolic fraction of neutrophils. It is also found to some extent in monocytes and activated macrophages. The concentration of calprotectin is greater in faeces than in plasma and significantly increased levels are found in patients with bowel inflammation. Measurement of faecal Calprotectin is considered a reliable indicator of inflammation and numerous studies show that while faecal Calprotectin concentrations are significantly elevated in patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), but not in patients suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Therefore, faecal calprotectin measurement can help aid differential diagnosis between IBD and IBS.

Increased levels of faecal calprotectin are shown to correlate well with both endoscopic and histological assessment of disease activity. Calprotectin assays can also be used to monitor patients to assess responses to therapy and help predict relapse.

The Quantum Blue® Calprotectin assay from BÜHLMANN is based on established lateral flow technology and provides a quantitative measure of Calprotectin in faecal samples in a rapid test format that is ideal for a POC or low through-put setting.

Simple and rapid extraction and test process

Use with a dedicated bench top reader (BI-POCTR-ABS sold separately) - time to result 12 minutes

<100µg/g = Indicative of either non-inflammatory situation or mild inflammation in the gut.
100-300µg/g = Can represent mild organic disease such as inflammation caused by NSAIDs, mild diverticulitis and IBD in remission phase. The low inflammatory response shown within this range may suggest repeating the measurement and performing further investigations.
>300µg/g = Indicative of active organic disease with inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract. Appropriate further investigative procedures by specialists are suggested.
