1-Anthroyl Cyanide is used to fluorescently label hydroxyl groups. It reacts specifically with primary hydroxyl groups, secondary hydroxyl groups and phenolic hydroxyl groups. However, reactivity with secondary hydroxyl groups will depend on the degree of steric hindrance. 1-Anthroyl Cyanide hardly reacts with tertiary hydroxyl groups. It can be useful for analysis of various drugs with a hydroxyl group for example, steroid hormones, bile acids or prostaglandins.
