Gamma Hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) Enzymatic Assay for urine and serum BÜHLMANN 100 tests for rapid detection of liquid ecstasy and Liquid X

Gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) is an endogenous substance present in the central nervous system (CNS). GHB binds at the specific excitatory GHB receptor and is a weak agonist for the inhibitory GABA3 receptor. In the past, GHB was used as an anaesthetic, and in treatment of insomnia and clinical depression. Today, the only accepted therapeutic application for GHB is in the treatment of alcoholism and narcolepsy.
GHB is also known as Liquid Ecstasy and Liquid X and is voluntarily consumed by partygoers, and is increasingly used to substitute more expensive drugs. Furthermore, GHB is administered on the sly to daze people in order to rape or rob them (knock out (K.O.) drops). At low doses, GHB causes euphoria, increases
enjoyment of movement and music, libido and sociability. Effects of GHB at higher doses include nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, agitation, visual disturbances, depressed breathing, amnesia, unconsciousness and death. The duration of GHB effects lasts from 1.5 to 3 hours or even longer, when consumed in large doses or when mixed with alcohol.
The BÜHLMANN enzymatic GHB (KK-GHB) kit is designed for the direct and quantitative determination of GHB in human urine and serum samples. The assay can be adapted to specific chemistry analysers according to the protocol.

Sample Type: Serum or urine. Collect urine (pH 5-8) without additives, keep the samples refrigerated, and have them filtered or centrifuged. Collect the supernatant. Collect blood into plain tubes (no anti-coagulant), avoid haemolysis, leave to clot for one hour, centrifuge for 10 minutes at approximately 1500 x g at room temperature (18-28 °C), and collect the supernatant. Sample storage: Urine and serum samples can be stored at 2-8 °C for at least two weeks. For longer storage keep the samples frozen at -20 °C.
