Uric acid and its salts are end products of purine metabolism. Uric acid is removed from the blood by the kidney and excreted in the urine and stool. Hyperuriceamia is commonly seen in gout where increased levels of uric acid lead to formation of monosodium urate crystals around the joints. Excess uric acid can also lead to kidney disease and the formation of kidney stones. Excess uric acid may be produced as a result of increased cell death as may be seen in some cancer therapies or a hereditary tendency toward overproduction. Hyperuriceamia can also result from decreased elimination, an indicator of kidney disease.

During the test uric acid in the sample is transformed by the enzyme uricase into allantoin and hydrogen peroxide. The peroxide subsequently reacts with the chromogen 4-aminoantipyrine/TOOS in the presence of peroxidase (POD) to form a red compound. The colour intensity as measured at 546nm is proportional to the amount of uric acid in the assayed sample.

Uric Acid Liquid is suitable for use with serum or plasma (EDTA, heparin) with an assay range of 0.3-25mg/dL or urine with a range of 0.02 - 1.49 mmol/L. The single ready-to-use liquid reagent has on-board stability of 60 days and a recommended calibration interval of 14 days. The recommended calibrator is Clin Chem Calibrator 16550 and the suggested QCs are the Clin Chem Controls 16150 and 16250.
