Total Protein measurement is an estimation of all the proteins in the plasma and is a combination of albumin and globulin. Albumin is a carrier protein and transports small molecules around the body whilst globulin protein includes numerous enzymes and antibodies. Total Protein measurement can be of use in the diagnosis of liver and kidney diseases and help monitor general health as this measurement is affected by malnutrition and dehydration.

In alkaline solution proteins in the sample combine with copper ions to form a coloured complex. The colour intensity as measured at 546nm is proportional to the amount of total protein in the sample. Total Protein is a single, ready-to-use liquid chemistry reagent. This direct colorimetric assay can be used to determine Total Protein in serum or plasma (heparin, EDTA) and has a measuring range of 0.5 - 10.0 g/dL. Each kit contains 6x65ml of reagent stored at 2-8C. On board stability for this reagent is typically 30 days with a calibration interval of 14 days,
