Magnesium can aid in the diagnosis of several disorders resulting from malnutrition, malabsorption and endocrinological disturbances. Hypermagnesemia is associated with an inappropriate dosage of therapeutic agents such as magnesium sulphate but also with dehydration and renal disorders. Hypomagnesiumsemia is often related to decreased calcium and potassium levels and is caused by either decreased intake or excretion. The Sentinel Magnesium Liquid assay is suitable for use with serum, plasma (heparin) or urine (dilute with HCl). Analytical range is 0.04-10mg/dL.

At alkaline pH the magnesium ions in the sample form a stable coloured complex with Xylidyl blue. The colour intensity as measured at 505nm is proportion to the amount of magnesium in the sample. The use of a specific complexant and detergent minimise interference from calcium and proteins in the sample. This single, ready-to-use, liquid reagent has an on board stability of 30 days at 2-8C and a calibration interval of 14 days. The recommended calibrator for the Magnesium assay is the Clinical Chemistry Calibrator 16550 and the suggested QCs for this test are the Clinical Chemistry Controls 16150 and 16250.
