Glucose enzymatic colorimetric assay manufactured by Sentinel Diagnostics

Glucose is a simple sugar that is the main source of energy for the body, most cells require glucose for energy production and the brain and nervous system rely on glucose and can only function when blood glucose remains within a certain range. Ingested carbohydrates are broken down into glucose and other simple sugars that are absorbed in the small intestine and circulated around the body. The pancreatic hormones insulin and glucagon regulate blood glucose levels and determine how glucose is used or stored by the body. Normally blood glucose rises slightly after a meal and insulin is released to bring the level back to normal and glucose is stored in the liver. If blood glucose falls below the normal range as can occur after strenuous exercise or between meals glucagon is released promoting release of glucose from the liver. Measuring glucose can help diagnose and monitor diabetes and hypoglycaemia.

Sentinel Diagnostics Glucose Liquid is an enzymatic colorimetric assay and uses the Trinder method principles of glucose oxidase and peroxidase oxidation. Glucose in the sample is first oxidised by glucose oxidase (GOD) to give gluconic acid and hydrogen peroxide. The presence of peroxidase (POD) the hydrogen peroxide formed by glucose oxidation will react with 4-aminoantupyrine and hydroxybenzoic acid to form a red compound. The colour intensity as measured at 505nm is proportional to the concentration of glucose in the sample. Glucose Liquid is a single, ready-to-use liquid chemistry for measuring glucose in serum, plasma (heparin or EDTA, urine or cerebrospinal fluid. This Glucose assay measuring range is 3-400 mg/dL and is suitable for manual methods of determination as detailed on the accompanying pack insert and can also be automated - a range of applications for clinical chemistry analysers are available (please enquire). Reagents are stored at 2-8C and have an on board stability of 30 days. The recommended calibrator for this assay is the Clin Chem Calibrator (16550) and the calibration interval is 14 days. For QC purposes we recommend the Clin Chem Controls (16150, 16250).
