Sericin is a silk protein derived from silkworms used in the production of the silkworm cocoon. Supplementation of media with sericin protein can be beneficial in some cell culture protocols. In mammalian cell culture sericin may be an effective substitute for foetal bovine serum and serum-free medium containing sericin has been successfully used to cryopreserve some cells.

It has been reported that addition of 0.1% (w/v) pure sericin to culture media, as an alternative to using foetal bovine serum, stimulates cell proliferation and suppresses cell-death^1-4. Addition of sericin (1%w/w) and DMSO to media can also be used as an effective serum-free cell freezing medium^5-7.
