UniWells™ Horizontal Co-Culture Plate

The UniWells™ Horizontal Co-Culture Plate is a cell culture plate system designed for simultaneous co-culture of cell populations and allows for effective investigation of processes such as transport, migration and invasion.

The system works by culturing 2 different cell populations, 1 in each dish, and preventing cell migration between the 2 by using one of the corresponding Uniwell™ filters. By doing this, factors such as cell interaction can be easily observed.

The system can be used in a few different ways to allow for a variety of different experiments to be run. The simplest method is culturing cells and filling the system enough so media can flow between the 2 isolated dishes. This provide a single uniform environment for cells to grow in and as such different cell populations can be observed growing in the same environment, but without direct cell-cell interaction. Alternatively, if the wells are filled separately below the level of the connecting section, the 2 cell populations can be completely isolated from each other during growth. This allows for direct observation of cell populations isolated from each other and growing in different conditions. This can be expanded further once the cells have grown sufficiently by filling the wells further to allow flow of media between the 2 and therefore restoring long-range cell-cell interactions through cytokines and other messaging molecules.

The layout and horizontal nature of Uniwell horizontal co-culture plate improves greatly on previous co-culture methods carried out using a smaller growth well lowered vertically into a larger growth well:

•Complete isolation is possible, allowing for cell populations to be co-cultured in different, isolated environments

•Both wells are equal in size and surface area, providing the same growth area for cultures, eliminating the effect of differing well sizes seen in previous methods.

•Horizontal layout allows easy, simultaneous, direct observation of cell populations at all times.

•Clogging of filters by cells, a common issue with previous methods, prevented by the new horizontal layout. Previously gravity would pull cells from the upper well into the filter membrane and limit experimental effectiveness.

Overall the Uniwell horizontal co-culture plate, especially when used in conjunction with the Uniwell™ filter membranes, provides simple and improved co-culture of cell populations, allowing you to better investigate many areas including exosomes and other cell transportation mechanism and cell migration and invasion.
