Liver Fibrosis is prevalent in millions of Europeans as a result of viral hepatitis, alcoholism, fatty liver disease or genetic disorders. Fibrotic injury distorts the normal liver architecture and can result in organ dysfunction and hypertension. Liver Fibrosis can progress silently and lead to cirrhosis and also hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Stage diagnosis is essential for optimal treatment decisions and serum Hyaluronic Acid (HA) measurement can assist in diagnosis and monitoring of liver fibrosis and cirrhosis. Serum levels of HA are typically low in healthy individuals as circulating HA is rapidly removed from the blood by sinusoidal endothelial cells (SECs) in the liver. Serum HA correlates with liver pathology, particularly in cirrhosis, where there is a reduction in HA receptors resulting in an increase in circulating HA.

The Wako HA Kit is a latex agglutination method for use on automated chemistry analysers and can be used to measure Hyaluronic Acid in both serum and plasma samples. Free HA in the sample is bound by hyaluronic acid binding protein (HABP) which is then captured by latex particles coated with Anti-HABP producing an insoluble aggregate. The solution turbidity as measured at 800nm is proportional to the sample Hyaluronic Acid content.

The HA Latex assay should be used with the Hyaluronic Acid Calibrator 993-71115 and HA Control Set 998-71165. These liquid stable, ready-to–use reagents: R1: 2x15ml, R2: 2x6ml; have an open vial stability of 30 days at 4C and can be placed directly on a number of routine chemistry analysers for ease of use.
