Glutathione (Reduced Form) produced by FUJIFILM Wako Chemical Corporation
Glutathione is an important antioxidant that prevents cellular damage from reactive oxygen species. It exists in both reduced (GSH) and oxidised (GSSG) states. In its reduced state the glutathione serves as an electron donor reducing disulphide bonds formed within cytoplasmic proteins to cysteines. In donating an electron glutathione becomes reactive but readily combines with another reactive glutathione to form glutathione disulphide (GSSG). Reduced glutathione can be regenerated from GSSG by the enzyme glutathione reductase (GSR). The ratio of GSH to GSSG is sometimes used as a measure of cellular toxicity.
