Menaquinone-7 Standard produced by FUJIFILM Wako Chemical Corporation
Vitamin K2 has several subtypes which differ in isoprenoid chain length, these menaquinones (MK) are characterised by number of isoprenoid residues in their side chain, MK-n. The two most studied menaquinones are MK-4 and MK-7. MK-4 is normally synthesised from vitamin K1 in certain tissues such as arterial walls and pancreas. Bacteria in the colon can also convert vitamin K1 into vitamin K2 producing a range of menaquinones but in particular the MK-7 to MK-11 forms. MK-7 is especially prevalent in natto, a traditional Japanese dish of fermented soy beans.
MK-7 facilitates the maturation of osteocalcin in bones. Mature osteocalcin is considered to have increased affinity with calcium and serve a function in maintaining normal bones. It is noted as an essential vitamin for normal ossification because an increased level of immature osteocalcin is likely to cause osteoporosis and fracture.
