Resveratrol is a naturally occurring polyphenol antioxidant found in red wine, grape skins, blueberries, raspberries and mulberries. It is an activator of sirtuin 1 (SIRT1), a class III histone deacetylase (HDAC) enzyme. Sirtuin activity has been linked to gene repression, metabolic control, apoptosis and cell survival, DNA repair, development and inflammation. It is also a selective inhibitor of cyclooxygenase 1 (COX-1) (ED50=15µM) and inhibits hydroperoxygenase activities of COX-1 (ED50=37.µM).
Resveratrol has been investigated for beneficial effects in cancer, neurodegenerative disease, diabetes and inflammation.
