Digitonin is a steroid glycoside used as a solvent in membrane protein characterisation studies. This purified preparation of digitonin eliminates problems associated with conventional preparations and is highly soluble (4%) in water without heating. Little or no precipitation is observed even after cooling and not filtration is necessary. Once made up digitonin solutions are stable for up to six days.
It is often used in membrane protein research, in particular when studying neurotransmitter receptors such as dopamine, beta-adrenaline, GABA or acetylcholine receptors. It is often difficult to dissolve and extract brain neurotransmitter receptors that are almost completely surrounded by lipids using conventional detergents like Triton X-100, Nonidet P-40 or CHAPS. Wako digitonin provides excellent solubilisation and extraction efficiency for these samples.
