Galectins are a family of proteins which typically bind β-galactose-containing glycoconjugates and conserve the primary structural homology in their carbohydrate recognition domains (CRDs). The galectin family is classified into three groups according to their structure: prototypical-type, chimeric-type and tandem-repeat-type. Galectin 3 is of the chimeric-type. This full length galectin-3 contains the carbohydrate-recognition domain in the C-terminal part and the tandem repeats of short amino acid segment in the N-terminus. Galectin-3 is involved in cell growth, adhesion and apoptosis.
