Vitamin K2 has several subtypes which differ in isoprenoid chain length, these menaquinones (MK) are characterised by number of isoprenoid residues in their side chain, MK-n. The two most studied menaquinones are MK-4 and MK-7. MK-4 is normally synthesised from vitamin K1 in certain tissues such as arterial walls and pancreas.
