Phthalic Acid Esters are extensively used as plasticisers of synthetic resins such as polyvinyl chloride. Some phthalates are now subject to specific legislation. The EU has set a maximum specific migration limit from food contact materials of 9mg/kg food for the sum of DINP and diisodecyl phthalates. Their use in toys is also regulated. This is a reference standard for use in phthalic acid ester analysis by Gas Chromatography.
