Valproic acid has been used as an antiepileptic. It has an activity enhancing effect on the GABA nerve system. It is also an inhibitor of histone deacetylase (HDAC)-1. HDACs play a central role in chromatin structure formation associated with the nuclear distribution of DNA. HDAC inhibitors show connections with cell division cycles and differentiation, as well with anti-tumor activity and apoptosis-inducing activity through the inhbition ofdeacetylase activity. Valproic acid can also enahce efficiency of iPS cell induction by Oct4, Klf4 and Sox2.
