Stem cell factor (SCF) produced by FUJIFILM Wako Chemical Corporation
Stem cell factor (SCF) triggers intracellular signalling via the c-Kit receptor and promotes the growth of blood cells in the early stages of haematopoiesis. SCF and c-Kit play an indispensable role in the differentiation/proliferation/survival of hematopoietic cells necessary for the proper functioning of melanocytes and germ cells. SCF by itself does not affect progenitor cells to any significant degree but has been shown to display a synergistic effect in combination with other cytokines, namely EPO and TPO. In clinical studies, SCF is being used to collect hematopoietic stem cells in the peripheral blood of patients with malignant lymphoma for the purpose of auto transplantation. More research is necessary to elucidate the mechanism behind the synergistic effect observed when SCF is combined with other cytokines.
