Interleukin 6 (IL-6) is a cytokine produced by various types of cells including T cells, monocytes, fibroblasts and epithelial cells. It is involved in a wide range of functions such as B cell differentiation/proliferation; antibody production; induction of megakaryocyte extension through interaction with IL-3; platelet production; and the expression of acute-phase reactants in the liver. IL-6 triggers intracellular signalling via the dimeric protein that consists of a IL-6Rα chain and a gp130 component.

Biological activity: The ED₅₀ is less than 0.1ng/ml, determined by its ability to stimulate the proliferation of Il-6 dependent mouse 7TD1 cells, corresponding to a specific activity of >1x10⁷ units/mg.


Reconstitute in water to a concentration of 0.1-0.5mg/ml. This working solution can then be diluted into other aqueous buffers.
