Faecal Elastase is increasingly being used as a non-invasive first line test to assess patients with Chronic Pancreatitis, Cystic Fibrosis, chronic Inflammatory Bowel Disease and other situations involving exocrine pancreas dysfunction.

Faecal Elastase is used for the diagnosis or exclusion of pancreatic exocrine insufficiency which can be caused by chronic pancreatitis, cystic fibrosis, diabetes mellitus, chronic IBD, cholelithiasis (gallstones) and pancreatic tumour to name a few.
Elastase is a pancreatic enzyme which helps to break down connective tissue. It is present in serum, urine and faeces. During intestinal transit it does not undergo any significant degradation. Therefore, it is an excellent marker of pancreatic insufficiency.
Assessment of exocrine pancreatic function has traditionally been carried out using invasive, unpleasant and expensive procedures. The main procedures currently used for the diagnosis of pancreatic function are; Colonoscopy, Secretin Stimulation test, CT and Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). Measurement of faecal elastase has been shown to be an excellent practical alternative to these procedures and has the advantage of being carried out on random faecal specimens.
Alpha Labs has two Faecal Elastase kits available. Both are ELISA methods. One (BS-86-01-SK15) has an additional low end standard (15µg/g) specifically for Cystic Fibrosis patients.
Both kits can be run manually or automated on a commercial processor such as the Dynex DS2TM. Alpha can offer a full solution with the Elastase ELISA and the DS2.
