Ionized calcium binding adaptor (Iba1), alternatively known as allograft inflammatory factor 1 (AIF-1), is a 17kDa calcium binding protein found exclusively in the cytoplasm of macrophages where it is involved in many processes including actin binding, membrane ruffling and phagocytosis. Microglia are the resident macrophages of the brain and as such are the only brain cells to express Iba1. In addition, on activation microglial Iba1 is upregulated, making it an exceptionally effective marker for activated microglia.

Microglia are involved in many processes in the brain, particularly phagocytosis, and are vital components of the inflammatory response. As such are implicated in many neurological diseases and injuries, particularly Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. As a result, Iba1
staining is a vital imaging technique in the study of these neurological diseases and injuries, particularly microglial-mediated clearance of amyloid beta (Aβ).
This is a polyclonal primary antibody designed for use in immunohistochemical staining. Raised in goats it is specific for an epitope on the c-terminus region of mouse and rat Iba1, thereby exceptionally useful in in vivo studies. As a polyclonal antibody it has an increased sensitivity and can provide a stronger signal than the equivalent monoclonal antibody.
