Cryptococcal Antigen Systems

Immune system under attack Cryptococcus - The Problem

Cryptococcosis is an opportunistic infection found in immunocompromised individuals.

The incidence is rising due to the increase in the number of patients who are:

  • on Chemotherapy or
  • with HIV infection or
  • on anti-rejection drugs following transplantation.

Cryptococcus fungal infections can remain undetected until symptoms become apparent.

Then they are very difficult to treat.

Cryptococcosis is the fourth most common cause of death amongst AIDS patients globally.

Cryptococcus - The Solution

Detection of Cryptococcal Antigens (CrAg) has been the primary method for laboratory diagnosis of a current infection.

We offer two solutions for the detection of CrAg; the Immy LFA Strip, and the Immy Latex test. These are compared by Serotype sensitivity, to other available tests, in the table below.*

CrAg Method Sensitivity

Immunoassay Method Serotype sensitivity (ng CrAg/ml)
  A B C D
Immy LFA Strip 1 1 9 8
Immy Latex 28 47 380 62
Meridian CALAS Latex 19 37 940 54
Inverness Latex 38 64 1,600 50

Cryptococcus - The Products

1. CrAg Lateral Flow Assay (Immy LFA Strip)

CrAg Lateral Flow Assay Strip TestThis method detects either qualitatively or semi-quantitatively, the capsular polysaccharide antigens of Cryptococcus Neoformans in serum and spinal fluid, and offers significant advantages over the current latex methods:

  • More sensitive to different serotypes - especially C
  • Eliminates the sample pre treatment step
  • Includes a procedural control
  • Results in 10 Minutes
  • Cost effective

2. Latex Cryptococcal Antigen Detection System (Immy Latex)

The latex agglutination test is for the qualitative and semi-quantitative detection of the capsular polysaccharide antigens of Cryptococcus Neoformans in serum and spinal fluid, and has been the primary laboratory method of detection for many years.

  • Kit includes disposable ring slides, controls and pronase
  • Different kit sizes to minimise kit wastage
  • Pre-treatment of samples with pronase reduces non-specific interference and enhances the detection of the capsular polysaccharide antigens
