Bowel Cancer is the second biggest Cancer killer in the UK after lung cancer. Around 35,000 people are diagnosed every year, and of these only 50% will survive currently.
Recent studies suggest that over 90% of Bowel cancer patients would survive if they were identified and treated in the early stages of the disease. In the UK a national screening program has been implemented to do just that. Many cancers start as small growths on the lining of the gut called “Polyps”. The formation of these polyps becomes more common as we get older, and not all polyps will develop into cancerous growths. Patients who have developed polyps can be identified as these tend to bleed into the gut and this blood can be found in the faeces. The polyps if potentially cancerous can easily be removed during a colonoscopy.
Alpha Laboratories is the supplier of Faecal Occult Blood Testing (FOBT) kits used in the national screening program in England Scotland and Wales. The kits work by identifying blood that may be present in the faeces of patients in the early stages of the disease. A positive test will result in a visit to the Colonoscopy unit, where the cause of the bleeding can be identified.
Alpha Laboratories has a range of FOBT products depending on the clinical situation. Whether it is screening the asymptomatic population or for use in confirming symptomatic patients have demonstrable bleeding, Alpha Laboratories has a suitable test, please select your area of interest from the box below.

A range of guaiac-based methods which use a dried faeces format for more acceptable testing. All tests have:

hema-screen™ EZ-WIPE is a new concept in FOBt allowing the patient to simply wipe themselves after a bowel motion with the EZ-WIPE. The stool is then present on the EZ-WIPE ready for testing. The analytical detection limit is the same as the other guaiac Hema-screen slides. The triple sample protocol helps overcome the problem of intermittent bleeding.
Collection, transportation and testing - all in one product! hema-screen™SPECIFIC, a unique approach to FIT that overcomes the issue and expense of sending liquids through the post. The DEVEL-A-TAB card makes FIT sample collection as easy as more traditional guaiac cards. Samples can then be returned to the laboratory using the mailing envelope. With 30 days stability on the card testing can be carried out as soon as the sample arrives in the lab, or run in more convenient batches.
A rapid, cost-effective, convenient, qualitative and integrated wo-tier test method for detecting human haemoglobin in faeces. hema-screen CONFIRM combines the familiar guaiac faecal occult blood test (FOBt) with hema-screen SPECIFIC, a faecal immunochemical test (FIT)
hema-screen CONFIRM features an innovative sampling method that allows a guaiac positive test result to be further tested specifically for human haemoglobin using the same faecal specimen. Stability after sample application is 21 days for FOBt and 30 days for FIT:
